How Many Concert Promoters Are There in America? What Federal Data Can Actually Count

A federal industry code can describe promoter establishments, but the category is broader than live music. Employment tables measure workers, not promoter firms.

Central finding

Census counted 9,305 employer establishments in NAICS 7113 in 2023, but these sources do not establish a national number of concert-only promoters. Census NAICS 7113 covers promoters of performing arts, sports and similar events; 711310 and 711320 separate operators with and without facilities. Agents and managers are classified under 711410, outside 7113. BLS combined promoter-and-agent employment cannot be relabeled as a count of independent concert promoters.

The short answer is a boundary, not a number

To count concert promoters you need a definition of a firm or establishment, a geographic scope, a period and a way to identify which businesses promote music rather than sports or other performing arts. The federal classifications named here do not isolate that target. A single business may promote different event types, and a venue may be owned, operated or booked by another party. A workforce series is therefore no shortcut to a business count. 12

What the 2023 Census count includes

County Business Patterns counted 9,305 employer establishments in 2023 in NAICS 7113. This is a count of operating employer locations in a classification spanning promoters of performing arts, sports and similar events. It is neither a count of concert-only companies nor a count of individual promoters, sole contractors, national brands or workers. The instrument renders 93 whole marks for 9,300 establishments and a fractional mark for the remaining five, not one mark per real company. 34

Read the NAICS branches literally

NAICS 7113 is Promoters of Performing Arts, Sports, and Similar Events. Within it, 711310 covers promoters with facilities and 711320 promoters without facilities. “With facilities” is an industry classification, not proof that an establishment owns a building outright; leasing and operating relationships need separate evidence. The outside branch 711410 is Agents and Managers for Artists, Athletes, Entertainers, and Other Public Figures. It is not a subdivision of 7113. 1

Establishments, companies and employees are not synonyms

An establishment refers to a business location under the statistical program’s rules; one company can have multiple locations, and one person may work across related activities. An employment total measures jobs, not unique company owners or promoters. An agent can route work to a promoter without becoming a promoter under the classification. Conversely a local promoter can operate from a business whose primary activity is classified differently. These are not technicalities: they determine which entity a published count describes.

The BLS combined series has another denominator

The BLS Current Employment Statistics example combines “Arts and sports promoters and agents and managers for public figures,” incorporating 7113 and 7114. Its published employment values are in thousands of employees, not counts of promoter businesses. Reading “72.1” in a table headed thousands as 72 firms—or as 72,100 concert promoters—would be wrong twice: wrong unit and wrong population. This analysis does not reprint a single illustrative point as if it measured firms. 2

The promoter workforce indicator should be read with its own source, period, units and inclusion notes. The NAICS reference provides the shorter classification answer. Even a detailed state establishment table would still require the same non-music caveat; this page does not assign unsourced state values to its visual.

How a defensible count would be built

First choose firms versus establishments, concert-only versus mixed-activity promoters, U.S. headquarters versus U.S. operations, and a reference year. Then collect a source-backed roster, reconcile duplicate legal names and local brands, and document the gaps in the smallest independent operators. A statistical 7113 total could be a broad comparator, but not a music-only denominator without independently validated classification. No national firm count is supplied because these two federal documents cannot establish it.

Research notes and limitations

NAICS 7113 includes non-music activities. BLS 7113 + 7114 employment covers workers in a broader combined category and is reported in thousands. Neither is a national count of concert-promotion firms.
