Free Press Summer Fest

Year-by-year archive of Free Press Summer Fest in Houston, 2009–2017: dates, venues, lineups, sourced attendance and economic-impact figures, and the ownership change that ended the founding era.

Free Press Summer Fest was an outdoor music festival held in Houston, Texas between 2009 and 2017. It began as a two-day event in Eleanor Tinsley Park along Buffalo Bayou, organised out of the alternative monthly Free Press Houston, and grew into the city's largest annual commercial music gathering before it was folded into a successor event.

The festival is useful as an economic case study because its scale was measured more than once and by different methods. A University of Houston analysis commissioned after the 2012 edition produced output, employment and income estimates that are unusually specific for a mid-size regional festival, and contemporaneous reporting recorded separate attendance counts that do not resolve into a single series.

This archive records each edition as it was documented at the time. Attendance and economic figures are reproduced with the measure and the party that produced them, never merged. Where sources disagree — as they do on 2012 attendance — the disagreement is shown rather than resolved.

The founding group's control ended with the sale of the majority interest to C3 Media, effective December 18, 2015; C3 had itself been acquired by Live Nation. Editions from 2016 onward are recorded as operated under that ownership. The 2017 edition lost its second day to flash-flood warnings, and in November 2017 Pegstar Concerts announced a spring successor, In Bloom, at the same park.

Historical images and films are reproduced or embedded here for documentary and reference purposes, with the original creator and source archive named on every item. Where a source permits linking rather than copying, its photography is linked and cited instead of reproduced. No image on this page is generated, reconstructed or stock. Where the source archive names no photographer, that is stated rather than a credit inferred.

Method

How this record was compiled

  • Each edition record starts from contemporaneous coverage of that year — a lineup announcement, a published schedule, or a same-week report — rather than from later retrospectives.
  • Attendance and economic figures carry an explicit measure type. The 81,000 figure used in the University of Houston study and separately reported gate estimates are different measures and are shown separately.
  • Lineups are reproduced as published. Where a source lists a schedule rather than a bill, the schedule order is preserved and the act count is stated.
  • Roles are recorded only for editions where a source names the person in that role. No role is inferred from adjacency or from a later interview.
