What is NAICS 711300? Promoters, agents and managers

NAICS industry group 7113 covers promoters of performing arts, sports and similar events. Federal statistical tables may display it as 711300, but the 2022 six-digit industries are 711310 for promoters with facilities and 711320 for promoters without facilities; agents and managers sit in 711410. None of these codes isolates concert promotion alone.

The classification tree

  • 71 — Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation: The sector. Everything below sits inside it.
  • 711 — Performing Arts, Spectator Sports, and Related Industries: The subsector containing promoters, performers, and agents alike.
  • 7113 — Promoters of Performing Arts, Sports, and Similar Events: The industry group behind the shorthand “711300.” It covers promoters of performing arts and sports events — it is not a music-only code.
  • 711310 — Promoters with Facilities: Establishments that organize, promote or manage live events — concerts and festivals included — in facilities they manage and operate, and establishments that operate arenas, stadiums and theaters for rent to other promoters.
  • 711320 — Promoters without Facilities: Establishments that organize, promote or manage live events in facilities managed by others. Theatrical (except motion picture) booking agencies are classified here.
  • 711130 — Musical Groups and Artists: The performers themselves. Bands and musical artists are classified here, not under 7113.
  • 711410 — Agents and Managers for Artists, Athletes, Entertainers, and Other Public Figures: Booking agents and personal managers sit here, in a different industry group from promoters.

What the numbers can measure

The Census taxonomy distinguishes promoter establishments from performers and artist representatives. The Bureau of Labor Statistics may publish an OEWS aggregate labelled 711300; that reporting label is not a new six-digit 2022 industry. Sports and non-music events also belong in the promoter group. The classification map explains why a promoter employment estimate must not be described as a count of music promoters alone.

The promoter group is broader than concerts

Start at sector 71, Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation. Within it, subsector 711 includes performing arts, spectator sports and related industries. Industry group 7113 narrows the focus to establishments whose principal business is promoting performing arts, sports and similar events. The word 'promoter' describes an establishment's primary activity in this classification, not everyone who negotiates a show. A festival presenter, sports-event promoter or theater-event promoter can fall within the group. Conversely, artists and performing companies have other classifications. Reading 7113 as a census of concert promoters would include activities outside music and miss music workers employed elsewhere.

With facilities: 711310

The 2022 Census classification places promoters that manage and operate the facilities where events are presented in 711310. Its scope also includes establishments operating arenas, stadiums and theaters for rent to other promoters. The facility distinction is about how the establishment conducts its business, not a claim that it owns the underlying real estate. An operator can run a room without holding title to it. That is why a count in this category cannot be turned into a count of promoter-owned concert venues. The venue-control reference separates ownership, operation, leases and booking rights before drawing a structural conclusion.

Without facilities: 711320

The corresponding 2022 industry, 711320, covers establishments that organize, promote or manage live events in facilities managed by others. The Census classification also places theatrical booking agencies other than motion-picture agencies here. 'Without facilities' does not mean without employees, equipment or working relationships with venues. It means the establishment does not manage and operate the facility in which it presents the event. A promoter who books an independent hall and the operator of that hall may therefore appear in different statistical categories even when they work on the same performance.

Agents and managers: 711410

Agents and managers for artists, athletes, entertainers and other public figures sit in 711410, outside promoter group 7113. A booking agent representing a musician and a promoter buying that musician's date play different roles; the statistical classification follows the establishment's principal activity rather than the vocabulary used in a press release. The role comparison distinguishes agent, manager, buyer and promoter. Neither an agent's roster nor a promoter's event calendar by itself identifies how many people are employed in either Census industry.

Why a table says 711300

Some federal statistical products label a combined promoter reporting category 711300. Read its published industry title and coverage before comparing it with the Census 2022 hierarchy: the trailing zeros in that reporting label do not create a separate six-digit 2022 leaf alongside 711310 and 711320. The Live Index classification map traces this distinction, and the promoter workforce indicator labels its measure as an industry-wide employment and wage series. It should not be relabeled as live-music employment simply because promoters are relevant to live music.

The boundary of the measure

None of 711310, 711320 or 711410 equals 'the music industry.' Each can contain sports, theater or other non-music activity, while music also takes place in performing companies, venues, ticketing businesses and work outside these categories. The same event can involve establishments in several codes. A wage estimate for a promoter category describes jobs at establishments classified there, not the fee paid to an artist and not the number of concerts. Use the Census definitions for classification, then name the precise statistical series, period and unit before making a comparison.

Where live music sits in the federal industry taxonomy

The spine runs 71 → 711 → 7113 → 711310/711320. Performers and their agents sit in different industry groups from the promoters — which is exactly why a “promoters” employment figure never counts musicians.

Sources and limits

NAICS describes principal business activity, not everyone who works on a show; a person's job title does not automatically determine an establishment's NAICS code.
