Live Nation vs AEG: What Each Company Actually Owns, Operates and Controls

The two names that anchor every conversation about American concert promotion are not symmetrical companies, and treating them as two flavors of the same thing is the first error most comparisons make. One files audited annual reports with the SEC; the other discloses what its private parent chooses to announce. That asymmetry runs through everything on this page, including what can honestly be compared at all.

What each company is

Live Nation Entertainment, Inc. is a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under LYV. Its Form 10-K reports three segments — Concerts, Ticketing, and Sponsorship & Advertising — and Ticketmaster has been its wholly owned subsidiary since the 2010 merger, a history documented in Who Owns Ticketmaster. AEG Presents is a privately held promoter and a subsidiary of Anschutz Entertainment Group, the Denver-based sports and entertainment company. Ownership is not operation, and neither is investment

Live Nation owns some venues, operates others under agreements, and holds reported minority investments — such as its reported stake in Insomniac Events — that confer no documented control. AEG's family includes wholly owned promoters, operated venues, and a festival site (the Empire Polo Club) that it does not own at all but operates under a long-term agreement with the Haagen family. Flattening those verbs into “owns” is how most published comparisons go wrong.
