Who owns what in live music

A map of the ownership questions readers ask most, drawn only from relationships the register already documents and grades.

In short

Owning a live music business, operating it, promoting its shows and selling its tickets are four different relationships, and one company can hold any combination of them. Live Nation owns Ticketmaster, and AEG owns AXS and Goldenvoice. Each row below states a relationship exactly as strongly as its source does, with the date it was last verified, and links to the record that cites it.

Owner, operator, promoter, producer, ticketing provider

Owner
An owner holds equity in the business or asset. Ownership can be whole, majority or a minority stake, and the register records which a source states.
Operator
An operator runs a venue or event day to day under a lease, management agreement or license, without necessarily owning it.
Promoter
A promoter books talent, takes the financial risk on a show and settles with the artist; a promoter can work in a venue it neither owns nor operates.
Producer
A producer builds and runs a festival or event — site, stages, programming — which may be a different company from the brand owner.
Ticketing provider
A ticketing provider sells primary tickets under contract with a venue or promoter. A ticketing contract is not ownership of the venue or the event.
