Does Live Nation Own Insomniac? What the Record Documents, and What It Doesn't
The EDC producer's relationship with Live Nation is one of the most persistent ownership questions in dance music, and it is unanswerable in the form usually asked — because the parties have never put the answer on the record. What exists is a 2013 first-party partnership announcement and contemporaneous named reporting of a roughly 50% stake. This page keeps the two evidence classes separate, which is the entire answer.

It is not documented that Live Nation owns Insomniac. In June 2013, Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella announced a “creative partnership” with Live Nation and said Insomniac would maintain creative control. Ask who owns the company behind Electric Daisy Carnival and most answers arrive with unearned confidence in one direction or the other: Live Nation bought Insomniac years ago, or Insomniac is fiercely independent. The documented record supports neither sentence as written, and the gap between what was announced and what was reported is precisely what this page preserves.
What the parties themselves have said
The first-party record is thin and deliberate: in June 2013, Insomniac founder Pasquale Rotella publicly announced a “creative partnership” with Live Nation and said Insomniac would maintain creative control. “Partnership” is not an equity disclosure, and no equity disclosure followed — not then, and not in the thirteen years since. Neither company has confirmed a percentage, a valuation, or governance terms.
What named reporting described
Contemporaneous Los Angeles Times coverage said prior reports described Live Nation purchasing roughly 50% of Insomniac, with Wall Street Journal reporting placing the stake at $50 million; Billboard's June 29, 2013 issue said terms were not immediately disclosed but that it had previously learned of a 50/50 share valued at $50 million to each side. That is reputable, named, contemporaneous reporting — and it is still reporting, not confirmation. Thirteen years of corporate change separate 2013's reported structure from whatever exists today, and no filing updates the public record either way.
How the register classifies it, and why it matters
