U.S. live music venue atlas

Concert venues held in the Live Index register, placed by state and region, with the owner, the operator and the ticketing platform recorded as three separate facts.

This is a verified register cohort, not a census. The United States has thousands of rooms that present live music, and no complete public list of them exists; what follows is the subset Live Index has researched from first-party and public-record sources and can defend document by document. Counts on this page describe the register. None of them is a market share, a supply estimate or a sample designed to be representative, and any reading of them as national shares would be wrong.

The register records ownership, operation, lease, booking and ticketing as distinct relationships, because in American live music they routinely sit with different parties. A city can own a building that a private company runs under contract, in a room whose tickets are sold by a third company that has no interest in either. Collapsing those into a single idea of control is the most common error in writing about venue infrastructure, and this page is built so it cannot be made. Where a venue publishes an operator but no owner, only operation is recorded; where a venue's own tickets page shows a platform, the record says a platform was observed in use and stops there.

Of the 94 placed records, 30 carry a recorded owner, 40 carry a recorded operator or lessee, and 12 carry both with the operator a different party from the owner. 15 are owned by a city, county, state body, university or non-profit within these records. 90 carry a capacity published by the venue or its operator, each stored with the configuration the figure describes, and 47 of those sit in the small and mid-scale bands under 2,500 capacity — everything from the under-250 rooms up through 1,000–2,499, where most working touring is actually booked.

The atlas

The default reading order is geographic: Northeast, Midwest, South and West, using the U.S. Census Bureau's four-region scheme, then by state, market and venue name. The District of Columbia sits in the South because the Census places it there. Every record below is present in the page's HTML; the search box, the filters and the map narrow what is displayed once scripting has loaded and create no separate address.

Each point is one venue record with coordinates derived from its published street address. The field is a plain latitude and longitude projection, not a basemap, and nothing is plotted that the register cannot source. Focus or hover a point to read the record.

What the cohort shows about itself

Five readings of the register, each with the number of records behind it. They describe coverage and record structure. They do not describe the American venue market.

Venue records held by region (n = 94)

West28

Counts of venue records in the Live Index industry register, by U.S. Census region, as reviewed 2026-08-25. This measures where the register has done its research. It is not a count of American music venues and carries no claim about regional supply.

Venue records by capacity band. The first four bands — under 250, 250–499, 500–999 and 1,000–2,499 — trace the developmental order an act typically moves through as it grows an audience; they are Live Index's own reading boundaries, not an industry standard. Bands are assigned only where the venue or its operator publishes a figure; 4 records carry no sourced capacity and sit in no band, and an unknown capacity is never read as zero. These are counts of the records Live Index holds, not shares of the American venue stock.

Every venue record with a capacity published by the venue or its operator, positioned on a logarithmic scale from about 100 to the largest figure in the cohort. Each dot is one room. No average is shown, because the number of records per region is too small for a regional average to mean anything, and because published capacities rest on different configurations.

How often the register holds an owner, an operator, or both for the same room — and how often the two are different parties. An absent owner means the register has not found a first-party or public record stating one, not that the venue has no owner.

No observation recorded50

Counts of venues whose own tickets page was observed directing purchasers to a named platform. The remaining records carry no ticketing observation at all; that absence is not evidence of independence, of a different platform, or of anything else. No contract, exclusivity or term is implied by an observation of use.

Take the data

The venue cohort is published as its own release, carrying the geographic fields, the capacity basis, the owner, operator and ticketing summaries, and the evidence behind each relationship. The full register release, covering every entity kind, remains available alongside it.

Method, limits and research direction

Records are built from official venue and operator pages, municipal, county and state authority records, corporate filings, and the venue's own ticketing links. Trade and local reporting is used for dated historical relationships that first-party records no longer state. Directory aggregators and user-edited encyclopaedias are not used as evidence for ownership, operation or ticketing.

Coordinates are derived from each venue's published street address and carry that basis in the record. 55 of 94 records are plotted. Capacity is stored as published, with its configuration; where a room's capacity varies with staging, the qualifier travels with the number rather than being averaged away. Regional coverage is uneven by construction, and the register does not smooth that unevenness or imply that a thinly covered region has fewer venues.

Research direction and methodology: Omar Afra, founder of Live Index. The reasoning behind the separated relation types is set out in The U.S. Live Music Venue Graph and in the register methodology.

Live Index industry register. Each venue, relationship and coordinate cites the document it was read from.

A record listed as held below the publication threshold exists in the register and in the machine-readable release, but has no page of its own until it carries a current relationship and enough sourced detail to answer a question.
