Saudi PIF in Music and Live Entertainment: What It Owns, What It Partners In, and What It Sold

The most repeated claim about PIF and live music — that it is a Live Nation shareholder — stopped being true in 2024. The filed record says zero shares, and the rest of the portfolio deserves the same precision.

In short

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund no longer owns Live Nation shares: a Schedule 13G amendment dated 14 November 2024, with an event date of 30 September 2024, reports beneficial ownership of 0 shares and 0.0%, replacing the 12,565,167 shares (about 5.5%) reported in February 2024. PIF's current music and live-entertainment positions are its 54% of MBC Group, completed on 22 September 2025, and its wholly owned Qiddiya Investment Company, whose venues include the Qiddiya Performing Arts Centre and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium. Separately, PIF's SURJ Sports Investment launched the radia joint venture with Live Nation and Oak View Group in July 2026 — a partnership, not an ownership interest in either company.

Sovereign capital in live entertainment is discussed almost entirely through one claim — that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund holds a stake in Live Nation — and that claim is now false on the filed record. Correcting it is not a small housekeeping matter: it changes the shape of any argument about who has a financial interest in the world's largest promoter. What PIF does hold in this sector is substantial, documented, and mostly domestic.

The Live Nation position was exited in 2024

A Schedule 13G Amendment No. 3, dated 14 November 2024 with an event date of 30 September 2024, reports PIF beneficial ownership of Live Nation Entertainment common stock as 0 shares, 0.0%. An earlier filing in February 2024 had reported 12,565,167 shares, approximately 5.5%. The February number is the one that still circulates; it is historical. Anyone citing PIF as a current Live Nation shareholder is citing a superseded filing, and the amendment that superseded it is public.

MBC Group: 54%, completed September 2025

PIF completed the acquisition of 54% of the entire share capital of MBC Group on 22 September 2025, for SAR 7.469 billion, about $1.992 billion. MBC is the largest media group in the Arab world, and its assets reach music and live entertainment directly: television channels, three radio stations, the Shahid streaming service, and MBC Studios. A controlling media stake is a distribution asset rather than a promoter asset, and it belongs in a live-music map for that reason — distribution decides which artists reach an audience at scale.

Qiddiya: wholly owned, and built around venues

Qiddiya Investment Company is wholly owned by PIF. Its programme includes purpose-built performance infrastructure: the Qiddiya Performing Arts Centre, with 2,000 seats across three venues and a stated plan of around 200 performances and events a year, and Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium, with more than 46,000 football seats and a stated capacity above 60,900 for concerts and large events. These are ownership positions in physical live-music capacity, which is a different kind of exposure from a minority holding in a listed promoter.

radia is a joint venture, not an acquisition

In July 2026, SURJ Sports Investment — a PIF company — launched radia together with Live Nation and Oak View Group, to manage, operate, activate and commercialise venues in Saudi Arabia. The relationship is a joint venture between three parties. It gives PIF a partnership with Live Nation; it does not give PIF ownership of Live Nation, and no ownership split for the venture is stated here. Keeping those apart is exactly the discipline the 2024 exit makes necessary, because the easy shorthand — “the Saudis are in business with Live Nation again” — is true, and “the Saudis own part of Live Nation” is not.

What this page declines to assert

MDLBEAST is frequently described as Saudi state-backed, and Live Index cites no first-party PIF ownership disclosure for it; the claim is recorded below as unverified rather than repeated. Public equities other than Live Nation are omitted for the same reason: a stale 13F or 13G is worse than silence, and a current holding would need a current filing. The bands below separate what is owned, what is a partnership, what was sold, and what is merely claimed.

Where this fits the market map

Live Nation's own ownership and segment structure is set out in what Live Nation owns and its listed peers in publicly traded live music companies. The register record for the promoter is at Live Nation Entertainment.

Research notes and limitations

This page reports holdings established by PIF's own disclosures and by a filed Schedule 13G amendment. It does not report PIF's full portfolio, the ownership split of the radia joint venture, PIF's interests in entities whose ownership it has not disclosed, or any position in a listed company for which no current filing is cited. The absence of a holding from this page means no current first-party source was verified for it — not that no relationship exists.
