Ticket Sales Velocity: How Fast a Concert Is Selling

A ticket count tells you where a show is. Velocity tells you where it is going, and it is read from a curve whose shape every promoter recognises and no source publishes.

Ticket sales velocity is the rate at which a show sells: tickets per day (or per hour in the first days), usually smoothed with a rolling average and plotted alongside cumulative sell-through as a share of sellable inventory. Most shows front-load at on-sale, decay, and lift again in the final days, but the size of each phase is show-specific. There is no published normal velocity curve for concerts; the series on this page is synthetic and labelled as such.

Every morning of a campaign a promoter receives a count: tickets sold since yesterday, tickets sold to date, tickets remaining. The count is a fact. Velocity is the reading of it — how the daily figure is moving, what the smoothed rate implies about the final number, and whether the show needs help. This page sets out what the reading consists of, using a synthetic series, and is explicit about what it cannot tell you.

Definition

Velocity is tickets sold per unit of time. In the first hours of an on-sale the unit is minutes or hours; through the campaign it is the day. Because daily counts are noisy — a weekend, a radio mention or a payday moves them — the working figure is usually a rolling average, seven days on this page. The third element is the cumulative curve: paid tickets to date as a share of sellable inventory, which is the sell-through at each point in time. The three together are what a promoter means by how a show is selling.

The shape, and why it is not a norm

The synthetic series on this page runs from a 60-day on-sale to the day of show. It front-loads: the largest single day is the on-sale itself, and the first two days account for a little under a third of everything the series sells. The middle of the campaign decays to a trickle. The final week lifts again as the date becomes concrete for buyers who had been meaning to get round to it, and in the series about a fifth of total sales fall in the last seven days including the day of show. The curve ends short of sellable inventory, at just under two-thirds, because most shows do.

Every one of those proportions was chosen to make the shape legible. Real campaigns vary enormously: a show that sells out in the on-sale hour has no middle and no lift; a show with a slow build on strong word of mouth has no front-load; a festival's curve looks nothing like a club's. No statistical programme collects daily ticket sales, ticketing companies do not publish them and promoters treat them as commercially sensitive. There is therefore no published normal, and a claim that a show should have sold a given share by a given day is somebody's rule of thumb wearing the clothes of a fact.

What a promoter reads from it

Three things, in order. First, whether the on-sale confirmed the draw estimate: the first-day and first-weekend counts are the first hard evidence against the projection the offer was built on. Second, whether the mid-campaign rate, projected forward, reaches the number the show needs — the sell-through calculator's required daily pace, which the pacing page puts against a comparable. Third, whether an intervention moved the curve: a marketing spend, a price change, a support announcement or a presale to a new list should show up as a step in the daily series, and if it does not, it did not work.

What velocity cannot tell you

Velocity is a measure of the primary sale. It does not see the secondary market, where a fast on-sale can mean brokers rather than fans, nor does it distinguish purchase from attendance — the attendance counts page is about that gap. It is also distorted by inventory changes: a production hold release late in a campaign adds sellable seats, which lowers the cumulative percentage without a single fewer ticket having sold, and a curve read without knowing the inventory events behind it will mislead.

Normalising velocity before comparing it

A raw daily count is only meaningful for the show that produced it. Before two curves can be put side by side, four adjustments are needed, and each is a judgement rather than a formula. Capacity: express the day’s sales as a share of sellable inventory rather than a count, so that 200 tickets in a 1,200-cap club and 200 in an 18,000-seat arena stop looking alike. Price: a gross-per-day series can rise while a tickets-per-day series falls if the cheap levels sold first, so decide which quantity the question is about and hold the scale constant when reading it. Days to event: campaigns differ in length, so align on days before the show rather than calendar dates, which is what turns velocity into pacing. Market and comparable: a rate that is slow for one artist in one city is fast for another, which is why velocity is read against a chosen comparable and never against a universal curve. Velocity is a single show’s own rate; pacing is that rate placed against something else. The two are kept on separate pages because they answer different questions.

What is documented

The vocabulary of a campaign — on-sale, presale, papering as the distribution of free or discounted tickets to increase attendance when sales are low — is documented by the published glossary cited here 1. The one regulator measurement of how tickets were allocated among presales, holds and the public on-sale, from the New York Attorney General's 2012–2015 sample, describes allocation rather than velocity and is cited for that reason only 2. No published series describes how fast concerts sell.
