Concert Ticket Scaling Explained

The ticket price a show is known for is usually the one printed on the fewest tickets. Scaling is the decision about how many seats sit at each price, and it determines what the room can gross before anyone buys.

Scaling the house is the process of dividing a show's sellable inventory into price levels — commonly labelled P1, P2, P3 and so on — and assigning each level a quantity and a face value. The scale, multiplied out, gives the gross potential: the most the show can take at face if every sellable ticket sells. Because quantities differ across levels, the seat-weighted average face value, not the top or bottom price, is what the scale actually implies. The four-level scale on this page is a worked scenario, not a template.

A concert has a ticket price the way a city has a temperature: there is one, somewhere, but the single figure hides a distribution. Scaling is the act of drawing that distribution. Once a show has been manifested and the sellable inventory is known, someone decides how many of those seats will be offered at which price. That decision is the scale, and everything financial that follows — the gross potential, the projections on the offer sheet, the break-even, the eventual settlement — is downstream of it.

Definition

To scale the house is to partition sellable inventory into price levels and assign each level a quantity and a face value. The levels are usually coded P1 downward, with P1 the most expensive. A level is not the same thing as a section: a level can span several sections, and one section can be split between levels where sightlines change partway along a row. The scale is show-specific. The same room can be scaled at two prices for a comedian and six for a touring production, and it can be rescaled during the sale window if the parties agree, which is one of the mechanisms behind price movement after the on-sale.

Who scales the house is a matter of the deal. The purchaser — the promoter or talent buyer — normally proposes a scale in the offer, because the offer's projected gross depends on it; the artist's agent, whose client's percentage is calculated from the gross, has a direct interest in it and frequently negotiates it; the venue supplies the manifest the scale must fit. Ticketing platforms describe the Event Organizer as the party that sets face value, which is the same allocation of authorship 1.

The worked scale

The builder on this page scales a hypothetical 12,000-seat sellable arena configuration across four levels, and every cell can be changed. In the illustrative default, P1 is 1,500 seats at $175 ($262,500 of potential), P2 is 2,500 at $125 ($312,500), P3 is 3,500 at $85 ($297,500) and P4 is 4,500 at $55 ($247,500). Three outputs matter. Gross potential is the sum of quantity times face across levels: $1,120,000 here. The seat-weighted average face value is that sum divided by the seat count — $93.33 — and it is the number the scale genuinely implies. The unweighted mean of the four printed prices, $110.00, is shown alongside only because it is the figure people quote by mistake: it treats the 1,500-seat top level and the 4,500-seat bottom level as if they were the same size.

The fourth output — the top level's share of potential against its share of seats — is where the economics of scaling live. In the default scale P1 holds an eighth of the seats and carries nearly a quarter of the potential, while P4 holds three-eighths of the seats and carries a little over a fifth. Move quantity into P1 and the potential rises without any printed price changing; move quantity out and the advertised top price is unchanged while the room is cheaper to fill. Two shows with identical price lists can therefore have materially different gross potentials, and a comparison of headline prices across shows that ignores quantities compares nothing.

Advertised minimum, maximum and midpoint versus the weighted average

Public discussion of ticket prices runs on two numbers: the cheapest advertised price and the most expensive. Neither is the scale, and neither is the average. In the worked scale the advertised range is $55 to $175. The midpoint of that range is $115.00; the unweighted mean of the four levels is $110.00; the seat-weighted average the scale actually implies is $93.33, because most of the seats sit in the two cheapest levels. A reader who takes the midpoint as the typical price overstates it by more than a fifth in this scenario, and the direction of the error is not fixed: a scale that puts most seats in the top levels would push the weighted average above the midpoint. The cheapest price may apply to a few hundred seats at the back of the upper level; the most expensive may apply to a platinum or premium level that is a small fraction of the house. What the scale tells you is the intended distribution before demand acts on it.

What is and is not documented

Scaling decisions are private. No public source records how many levels a show carried, what quantities were assigned to each, or how the scale changed during the sale, and this page does not estimate any of it. What is documented is the vocabulary — a published booking glossary lists ticket prices among the elements of an offer 2 — and the mechanism, which the platform's own material assigns to the Event Organizer 1. Everything beyond that on this page is a worked calculation or Live Index analysis, and is labelled as such.

Limits

A scale is a plan for face value. It does not include fees, which sit on top of face and are treated line by line in the fee stack research; it does not predict which levels sell; and it does not survive contact with a rescale, a hold release or a price change. Read a scale as a statement of what the parties intended the room to be worth, and read the settlement for what it turned out to be worth.
