Historical account

Bill Graham (1931–1991) was a concert promoter whose career connected the San Francisco ballroom scene to national touring and large benefit productions. The Bill Graham Memorial Foundation documents his transition from the San Francisco Mime Troupe’s November 1965 legal-defense benefit into promotion at the Fillmore. This is a historical record of his work, not a statement about the present ownership of venues carrying the Fillmore or Graham names.

His operating contribution was to combine programming with the physical work of presenting a show. The Foundation describes him booking artists, taking tickets and attending to the room between sets, with Bonnie MacLean contributing early posters. Its account also preserves Chet Helms and Charles Sullivan in the Fillmore history. That combination matters: artist discovery depended on permits, a functioning room and an audience experience as well as the bill itself.

Why Bill Graham matters in live music

Graham expanded into Fillmore East in 1968 and later into outdoor Day On The Green concerts and national tours. The Foundation records production of Amnesty International tours in 1986 and 1988, extending that operating practice across multiple cities and countries. Those accounts establish a widening production scope, not an audited profitability record. The Rock Hall separately identifies his Fillmore, Winterland and touring work. Live Index links this career to promotion and venue history while treating Another Planet Entertainment’s current operations as a separate, later corporate record.
