Methodology

Capacity is recorded per room, not per address, and reflects licensed capacity where available.

Multi-room buildings are decomposed so that a single large address does not distort band analysis.

Seasonal and temporary capacity is flagged and excluded from structural supply.

Venue Supply Index

A capacity-based measure of whether a live-music market contains the sequence of rooms artists and audiences need, from small clubs through theaters, amphitheaters and arenas.

A city can have many venues and still have an infrastructure problem. The relevant question is not simply how many rooms exist but whether their capacities form a workable progression. An artist who can sell 400 tickets but not 1,500 needs a different room from an artist who can sell 5,000, and a market that lacks the intermediate tier can force performers either to underplay, skip the city or accept a capacity jump that increases risk for both artist and promoter. The Venue Supply Index is intended to measure this structure directly.

The index should begin with a canonical inventory of active venues and their sellable concert capacities. Capacity should be stored as a range when configuration changes materially by event, and multiple rooms within one building should be represented separately when they function as distinct booking spaces. The primary output would show available capacity per 100,000 residents within defined bands, supplemented by a continuity measure that identifies large gaps between adjacent tiers.

Capacity bands

The initial national taxonomy can use bands such as under 250; 250–499; 500–999; 1,000–1,999; 2,000–4,999; 5,000–9,999; 10,000–19,999; and 20,000 or more. The boundaries should be tested against actual venue distributions rather than treated as permanent. City reports should also show raw inventory so readers can see when a score is sensitive to an arbitrary cutoff.

The measure should distinguish permanent purpose-built rooms from occasional spaces. A park, convention hall or warehouse capable of hosting a concert can add episodic supply without functioning as a year-round stage. Both are economically relevant, but they should occupy separate categories because touring agents cannot assume that temporary space is available on every routing cycle.

The capacity-gap problem

A capacity gap can be measured by comparing the number of active rooms in adjacent bands and by estimating the ratio between the largest room in one tier and the smallest room in the next. Markets with a sharp discontinuity may still support touring through flexible configurations, but the gap should be visible. The index can also measure the share of annual events occurring in each capacity tier, because a nominally available venue that is rarely booked provides less practical supply than a heavily utilized room.

This structure connects to the broader economics of artist development. A local act may begin in a 150-capacity room, move to 400, then 800 and 1,500 before theaters become viable. The progression is not a law; some artists leap tiers and others remain deliberately small. At the market level, however, a diverse ladder reduces the number of situations in which demand and available room size are badly mismatched.

Supply, ownership and access

Physical capacity is not identical to accessible capacity. A room can exist but be unavailable to a promoter because of exclusivity, booking relationships, sports schedules, religious use, institutional policy or production limitations. Live Index should therefore store both physical inventory and bookable live-music inventory where that distinction can be documented.

Ownership concentration should be displayed next to capacity distribution rather than incorporated invisibly. A market with several venue tiers under common ownership may have excellent physical infrastructure and less competitive booking access. Conversely, a fragmented market may have diverse ownership but weak technical infrastructure. The index should measure these separately so a favorable supply score is not misread as a conclusion about competition.

Population and metropolitan boundaries

Venue supply should normally be calculated at the metropolitan level because audiences and touring routes do not stop at municipal boundaries. City-core views remain useful for urban-planning analysis, but national comparisons should use consistent metropolitan definitions. The Census Bureau's metro population estimates provide a stable denominator, while local governments and venue records can support more granular submarket analysis.1

Research notes and limitations

No Venue Supply score is reported in this draft. The first public atlas requires verification of active status, capacity and concert use for each venue. Automated web extraction can accelerate inventory building, but capacity conflicts should be manually adjudicated because fire-code capacity, seated capacity, concert capacity and marketing capacity are often different numbers.
