Venue Capacity Atlas

A standardized inventory of live-music rooms organized by capacity, market, operating status and venue type so infrastructure gaps can be measured rather than described anecdotally.

Venue capacity is one of the basic units of live-music economics, yet there is no single public national inventory that consistently records active concert rooms, their configurations and their market roles. The Venue Capacity Atlas is intended to become that underlying infrastructure layer for Live Index. NIVA reported 153,646 events produced annually by the independent stages in its 2025 national study and 91 percent of those stages operating year-round, illustrating the scale of activity that must ultimately be connected to a verified venue universe.1 It should support the Venue Supply Index, Concert Activity Index, Market Gravity Index and city reports while remaining independently useful to researchers, promoters and policymakers.

Each record should represent a distinct bookable room rather than a brand name or building. A multi-room venue can therefore contain several records, while a stadium with multiple concert configurations may contain one venue record with a documented capacity range. The dataset should store the most defensible concert capacity available and preserve the source because fire-code capacity, seated capacity, general-admission capacity and promoter-advertised capacity can differ materially.

Core fields

The minimum record should include canonical venue name, alternate names, street location, metropolitan market, latitude and longitude, active status, venue type, ownership where verifiable, operator, primary concert capacity, capacity range, seated or standing configuration, opening date where known, closure date where applicable, source URL and last verification date. Ticketing and booking relationships can be stored as separate time-varying fields because those contracts may change without the venue itself changing.

Venue type should distinguish club, theater, music hall, amphitheater, arena, stadium, festival ground, civic auditorium and flexible/event space. The taxonomy should remain practical rather than architectural: the important distinction is how the room functions in the touring economy and whether it is routinely available for live music.

Verification

Automated discovery can identify potential venues and changes, but records should not enter the verified atlas solely because a search result or social profile exists. The verification process should use official venue pages, ticketing calendars, municipal records or reliable reporting and should record conflicting capacities rather than choosing the largest number. A confidence field can distinguish verified capacity, documented range and estimated capacity.

Closed venues should remain in the historical dataset. Deleting them would make it impossible to reconstruct the venue ladder in prior years or measure infrastructure loss. The atlas should therefore operate as a slowly changing dimension table in which status and ownership can be queried by date.

Publication

The public atlas should permit filtering by market, capacity band, venue type and operating status, with downloadable aggregate data where licensing permits. Population-normalized market views should use consistent Census Bureau metropolitan definitions and vintages rather than mixing city-proper and metro denominators.2 Individual venue pages should not automatically become indexable SEO pages unless they contain enough original information to justify a standalone resource. The objective is a useful dataset, not thousands of thin venue records.

Research notes and limitations

Capacity is inherently contextual, and no national atlas can remove that ambiguity entirely. Live Index should publish capacity as a range where necessary and identify configuration-specific values when possible. Temporary festival sites and occasional event spaces should be kept separate from year-round venue supply so they do not inflate permanent infrastructure counts.
