What is a versus deal in concert promotion?
A versus deal is a comparison written into a contract. Two numbers are calculated after the show and the larger one is paid; almost every argument about versus deals is really an argument about how the second number is defined.

A versus deal pays the artist either the guarantee or an agreed percentage of defined net income for the show — whichever is greater. Published booking glossaries define it in exactly those terms. The artist cannot earn less than the guarantee, and if the show performs well enough that the percentage calculation exceeds it, the percentage is paid instead. It is not additive: the guarantee and the percentage are alternatives, and only the larger is paid.
The percentage is negotiated
Glossaries that illustrate the structure often use a specific figure — one widely circulated example uses eighty-five percent — and that example is frequently repeated as though it were the market rate. It is not. The percentage, and the base it applies to, are negotiated for the engagement. A page that fixes a single number as the standard is asserting a market fact about private contracts that no public source establishes.
The base matters at least as much as the rate. A percentage of net income is not a percentage of ticket sales. Net is what remains after the show costs the contract recognises, which is why two deals quoting identical percentages can pay very differently depending on which expenses are approved, capped or excluded. Live Index research on gross revenue and artist profit works through why headline gross figures collapse once those deductions are applied.
How the comparison is made
The comparison happens at settlement, when box office receipts and the itemised show expenses are reconciled. Only then is it possible to compute the percentage figure and compare it with the guarantee. Until that point the artist's payment is known only as a minimum. This is also why the term is used loosely in conversation and precisely in contracts: to a booking agent, a versus deal describes a specific arithmetic; to a headline, it describes an artist taking a share of upside.
The structure allocates risk asymmetrically by design. The promoter absorbs the downside below the guarantee and shares the upside above the crossover point. Whether that trade favours either party depends on the guarantee level, the percentage, the expense definitions and the accuracy of the ticket-sales forecast the offer was built on — four variables that no single term summarises.
What this cannot tell you
Live Index is aware of no public dataset of versus-deal terms in the United States. Deal structures are disclosed selectively, usually in litigation, journalism or an artist's own account, and those disclosures are not a sample. This page therefore defines the mechanism and refuses the second question — how common versus deals are, and on what terms — because answering it would require evidence that does not exist in public form.
Sources and limits
- The percentage in a versus deal is a negotiated term. Example figures appearing in glossaries are illustrations, not benchmarks.
- Definitions of net income, approved expenses and the calculation base vary by contract and materially change the outcome.
- No public dataset records the prevalence or terms of versus deals, so no distribution is stated here.

- Cited as a published definition of booking vocabulary. A glossary establishes what a term means, not how often a term is used or on what commercial terms.
