Historical account
Claude Nobs co-founded the Montreux Jazz Festival with René Langel and Géo Voumard in 1967. The festival’s official timeline describes a three-day first edition with a 10,000-franc budget and appearances by Charles Lloyd, Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette. Its remembrance records Nobs’s death on January 10, 2013. This is an explicitly historical founder profile, not an account of current festival management.
The chronology provides more than a list of artists. It documents a recurring event whose performances became recordings: Bill Evans’s 1968 appearance became an album, and the 1969 Les McCann and Eddie Harris performance became Swiss Movement. The 1980 Marvin Gaye entry describes the artist agreeing to filming after viewing concert recordings at Nobs’s home. These examples show how presentation and audiovisual documentation could reinforce each other, building a festival record that outlived any one booking.
Why Claude Nobs matters in live music
The official timeline also preserves later collaborators, including Quincy Jones’s co-production from 1991 to 1993, rather than attributing every edition solely to Nobs. In 2013 it records the audiovisual collection’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register as The Claude Nobs Legacy. This source establishes a documentary legacy, not personal ownership of all recording rights or present operating control. For industry readers, Montreux is a case of festival programming becoming a long-term archive. The founder’s role, subsequent institution and recorded-work rights remain separate questions; no current directorship or foundation-founding claim is attached to Nobs here.
