U.S. household spending on live entertainment

Personal consumption expenditures on admissions to live entertainment excluding sports, from the Bureau of Economic Analysis monthly underlying detail accounts.

Current reading

Source not connected

The Bureau of Economic Analysis Data API requires a registered UserID. Live Index does not hold one for this environment, so no expenditure figure is published on this page.

The series is registered as U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, NIPA Underlying Detail Table 2.4.5U, monthly personal consumption expenditures (U20405). No figure, placeholder or substitute is published for it until the source is retrievable.

How to read it

This series measures household outlay, not industry revenue: it is what U.S. consumers pay for admissions, before the sector's own accounting of gross and net receipts.

Seasonally adjusted annual rates express each month at the pace it would imply over a full year. Levels are therefore roughly twelve times a single month's spending and should not be read as monthly totals.

Derivation

Monthly expenditure is stored as published, seasonally adjusted at annual rates. Year-over-year change is computed from the stored levels twelve months apart. No deflator is applied unless the corresponding chained index is retrieved alongside the current-dollar series.

Live Index stores the agency's published level for each period and recomputes derived figures from those stored levels on every read. No value is smoothed, interpolated, seasonally re-adjusted or projected, and a period the agency has not published is absent from the series rather than filled.

Limits of the measure

  • The underlying detail accounts are estimates built from source data of varying quality and are revised on the annual and comprehensive NIPA schedules.
  • Admissions exclude the ancillary spending — travel, lodging, food and beverage — that dominates most economic-impact claims about live events.
